The Sinuses

Most people with CF develop sinus disease. In fact, on sinus x-rays, 90-100% of CF patients will have evidence of sinus congestion even if they don’t have symptoms! Symptoms of sinus problems include recurrent sinus infections, headache, and mucous dripping at the back of the throat (called postnasal drip). Mucous from the sinuses can drip down into the airways and cause a lung infection. Nasal polyps are also seen in up to 30% of people with CF. Nasal polyps can block the nasal passages and as a result, people may find they don’t taste food as they used to. Polyps can be removed surgically but they tend to come back with time.
