How will I know if I have picked up Burkholderia cepacia complex?

The Toronto Adult CF program tracks the bacteria that are seen in our patients. People have their sputum analysed for bacteria at every clinic visit and at every hospitalization. If a person's sputum culture indicates that they have a new acquisition of BCC, the person will be contacted as soon as possible and a clinic visit will be scheduled to repeat the sputum sample and confirm the finding. All new BCC is investigated to determine whether it was picked up in the environment or contacted from another patient. An explanation, education (verbal and written material), as well as emotional support, will be provided for the patient and his/her family at this time.
