Focusing on the positive things…

My name is Amanda Turkiewicz, and I'm 25 years old, and I have cystic fibrosis and diabetes.

Living with these challenges definitely has it’s ups and downs, yet I've been so lucky to have such a loving and supportive network of family and friends. I remember when I was first diagnosed at around the age of 4, my parents used to feed me enzymes with apple sauce, but before long, I was encouraged to learn to swallow many at one time, which, I realize now, gave me more independence. I could keep up with the other kids that way. I became more aware that I did not want to stand out or be different. I thank them for that encouragement.  Despite all the treatments I have to do, pills I have to take, physiotherapy I have to endure, my family helped me to make it as normal as possible and not a reason to not participate in anything

Today, although the challenges might change a bit here and there, my outlook is still the same. I've been happily married for 3 years now to my husband Phil and we deal with the problems when they arise and not dwell on negative aspects of CF. We laugh a lot and we love to travel and socialize with our friends.  If people ask me about CF I am happy to talk about it, but we refuse to let it get in the way.

I have also been very blessed with my beautiful niece, Lily Rose. She has just turned one, and although she can be a handful, she is just so much fun! Babysitting her is a great workout for my lungs!
